Web Exploration Assignments

These activities will reinforce your ability to form, remember, and use mental representation of Web elements that are actually found on Web pages.

To use the Internet, you must be able to navigate different web pages to find and retrieve the information that you need.

Web Navigation is a repetition of four steps;

which we abbreviate as DOPE:

1. Orientation; You must know where you are on the page (focus), top, bottom, left, right. This is needed so that you can develop a consistent pattern of how to discover what is on the page.

2. Purpose; What do you want to do on this page?

3. Direction; What direction will you start moving?

4. Expectation; What are you expecting to happen when you make your move? This is essential in having a positive coping strategy if your expectation is not met.

In visiting actual Web sites, you should try and trust instincts or mental representations. This does not mean, however, that what you will find will always match what you expected. Your ability to cope with these differences is what will determine your ability to successfully navigate and complete your tasks.
