Description of Web Site Indexes:
It is usually necessary to provide indexes for a web site so that a user can explore and navigate a web site quickly. These indexed items are listed and made into new page links. The linked information or pages can reside on this web site or on another web site. A web site index can be a useful tool in defining the scope of the web site and tie together the individual parts of the web site
An example of a web site index is our SP86 class homepage: http://sp86.nolearninglimits.com/
Another example of a web site index is on the Delta College Homepage. On the left hand side of the page, in blue, is a list of links for the web site that includes;
Academic Programs
Admissions & Records
Assessment Center
Financial Aid/Veteran
Counseling
Schedule of Classes
And OthersDescription of Web site Tools
Another way in which indexes are often used on web sites are as Tools. Tools on a web site can be many different things.
Following are a few examples:
- Often used activities.
- Editing functions used on the web site
- Web site or application setup information.
- Access information.
- As portals to other applications
Following are examples of web sites where Tools are used:
- Delta College; http://www.deltacollege.edu/
- Delta College's online courses using the ETUDES environment; Etudes page
- Google; http://www.google.com/
- Amazon; http://www.amazon.com/
- YouTube; http://www.youtube.com/
The Tools section will often be seperated from the main area of the web pages. We will learn about web page layout when we study
the Table element category.Following are examples of how Tools might be arranged on a web page:
